FG Aims Creating Supportive Environment for Sports to Thrive

The Federal Government says it is committed to creating a supportive environment for new sports to thrive, contributing meaningfully to the development of Nigeria’s sports sector. Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, made the disclosure during a media briefing ahead of the Africa Knockout Championship, in Abuja.

He said the government’s broader strategy, under the Renewed Hope Initiative, is focused on building Nigeria’s sports economy through local development and international engagement. Dikko emphasized that hosting events like the Africa Knockout Championship is not just about competition, but about economic impact.

Recall that in the past few months, Nigeria has successfully hosted major tournaments, including the Under-18 and Under-20 African Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, the Karate Championship in Abuja, and the Armed Wrestling Championship, which drew participation from over 30 countries.

Meanwhile, with more events on the calendar, including TACONO and the Deep Football tournament, Dikko says the country is preparing to take on even bigger stages, such as the Commonwealth Games and the Africa Games.

He also emphasised on the need to integrate new sports into mainstream competitions, noting that innovation in sport opens doors for youth development and talent discovery.
